A flirtation with time

Flirtation with Time - Voyage

Classic and timeless, rocky rebels, and historically majestic. Here are the watches with that certain something extra that entices, seduces, and awakens covetousness.

Like a Kinder Egg

Chanel is an expert at ”reusing” details typical of the fashion house. When they created their first watch in 1987, the Première, they incorporated the octagonal shape of the stopper from the No 5 perfume bottle, which in turn is reminiscent of the contours of Place Vendôme, the view Gabrielle Chanel saw from her suite at the Ritz. To this, they added the interwoven leather and chain strap from Chanel's famous quilted bag, the 2.55. Now they have relaunched their classic, slightly updated, with a quartz movement, a black lacquer dial, and a gold-plated steel chain.

Playful design collaboration

The Berlin-based fashion designer Marina Hoermanseder I've had the chance to play around with Rado's ”Captain Cook” and adorned it with gemstones in all the colours of the rainbow. ”A flirt with Berlin in the 1990s,” she says herself. Behind the playful design lies the R763 automatic movement with 25 jewels, three hands, and a date display at three o'clock. It has an 80-hour power reserve and an anti-magnetic Nivachron™ balance spring. Price: 35,200 Swedish kronor.

Rock solid

Gemstones on the dial have become popular recently, though it's not a new idea. In Omega's Constellation Aventurine, it's the aventurine stone that is used here; the model is also available in other colours. Diamonds on the dial and bezel give it that extra sparkle. The model measures 29mm and is equipped with Omegas automatic movement 8701 and made in Sedna gold, which is Omega's own rose gold alloy. Price 272,700 Swedish Kronor.

A queenly tale

1810, Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples and Napoleon's youngest sister, commissioned an unusual watch from Breguet, the clockmaker of the era: a watch with an oval case, attached to a bracelet. Today, Caroline's watch has its own line at Breguet: Queen of Naples. This model sparkles a little extra with diamonds of various sizes set on the dial. Equipped with an automatic movement.

Dancing diamonds

In 1993, Caroline Scheufele created a steel sports watch with diamonds for Chopard. At the time, the mix of materials was considered unthinkable – now Happy Sport is a classic. The delicate Happy Sport 25 mm is a new addition to the family and is available in various designs. Here with five dancing diamonds, a steel case and a bezel in fair-mined 18K rose gold, along with an extra-long strap.

French charm

Cartier Baignoire Captures that French chic: Sophisticated and adorably soft at the same time. The idea for the model was born way back in 1912, when Louis Cartier simply stretched out the shape of a traditional round watch, imagine taking a rubber band and stretching it. The shape, with its two parallel lines joined by two curved lines, brought to mind a bathtub, hence the name, the word ”baignoire,” which means exactly bathtub in French. Here is the spring's new arrival, a model that seems destined to become a real must-have watch among fashionistas.

And the oscar goes to…

Don't be surprised if Hermès The ”Arceau” model achieves the same iconic status as the fashion house's Birkin and Kelly bags. Recently, the beautiful ”Arceau Le Temps Voyageur” won first prize in the Ladies” and Men's Complication Watch Prize category at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, an event that can arguably be described as the watch world's equivalent to the Oscars. It is a model equipped with dual time zones – where ”home time" is shown in a small opening at twelve o'clock, while local time is displayed on a separate small dial that can move around the main dial.

Twisting beauties

Bulgaria Serpenti design is celebrating 75 years this year, and ever since these sinuous beauties, in the form of both watches and jewellery, first saw the light of day, they have been loved by style icons and celebrities, from Elizabeth Taylor to Zendaya. And by all of us.

Rock renegade

Scottish designer Fiona Kruger is a newcomer to the watch scene but has already achieved a kind of rock star status with its rebellious design. You understand why when you see the ”Celebration Skull,” a skeleton watch – that is, a watch with a transparent dial and/or case back that shows as much of the movement as possible. This model is equipped with, among other things, a date function and self-luminous details made of Superluminova.

Elegant attitude

Longines The motto is ”Elegance is an attitude” and the feminine yet austere elegance of Dolcevita is perhaps particularly appreciated. In ”DOLCEVITA x YVY,” that elegance has been joined by a new, slightly tougher attitude. The model is available in two sizes, with or without diamonds, and with leather straps in various colours. The model with a brown leather strap and diamonds on the case costs 35,750 kronor.

Full moon

The moon phase on a watch shows what stage the moon is in. It might sound completely pointless today, but this complication was once very useful for keeping track of the tides. It's poetically beautiful, at least: Portofino Automatic Moon Phase, 37mm, in steel with a brown leather strap from IWC Schaffhausen. Price 96,500 kronor.
