PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER Tobias Regell – a moment of truth

Remove

With its timeless black and white imagery, Tobias Regell has portrayed some of Sweden's most famous faces – always with the same quiet intensity and presence. Now three decades of his portraits are collected in a retrospective
which allows the viewer to step straight into the photographer's inner world.

PHOTOGRAPHIC STOCKHOLM
the exhibition You Saw Me With Fearless Eyes – a comprehensive retrospective of portrait photographer Tobias Regell. With an expression that is as stripped-down as it is intense, Rules has become known for capturing the innermost, rather than the surface, of the human being. The exhibition brings together more than a hundred works
– iconic portraits of artists, actors and dancers, but also previously unpublished images that show the breadth of Regell's artistry. Here, people meet in movement and at rest, in meetings where the camera is not an obstacle but an extension of trust.

– This exhibition is a tribute to the trust in being seen, and the moments where people show their innermost selves, says Tobias Regell. The curator Marina Kereklidou and Fotografiska's Mohamed Mire have together created a scenography where Regell's world becomes palpably present, a reconstruction of his studio allows the visitor to enter the creative process. There, the portraits meet in silent dialogues, where time and space blur: a face photographed in the 1990s can speak to a new, as if they shared the same breath. Regell, who began his career in fashion photography, has over the years worked
with everything from Vogue to Dagens Nyheter and has portrayed some of Sweden's most famous cultural figures. But regardless of the context, his gaze has remained the same: honest, concentrated and full of quiet intensity.

– Tobias's images carry a stillness that feels deeply human. His portraits are not about surface, but about encounters, says Marina Kereklidou. You saw me with fearless eyes reminds us of what photography can be when all the noise is silenced: a moment of truth between two glances.
