The melting ballad "Butterfly" is now joined by a host of other butterflies. Butterflies sprinkled with diamonds, created in collaboration with Chopard – jewellery for a star.

Mariah Carey

Boron New York.
Family The Monroe and Moroccan twins, 11.
Do: Singer, songwriter, actress.
Currently With the most beautiful of jewellery in collaboration with the jewellery house Chopard.

Diamonds go with everything. If I have a favourite piece of jewellery that I feel brings me luck, I wear it all the time – day and night.

Mariah Carey I need a new jewellery box. The American songbird, who at this time of year is topping the world charts with one of the all-time greatest Christmas songs All I Want For Christmas, Over the years, she has accumulated so many beautiful, sparkling pieces of jewellery that they no longer fit in the luxurious black and white jewellery box from Prada – which she herself describes as enormous.

– ‘I love beautiful things,’ she said Mariah recently in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine. She does not consider herself a fanatical jewellery collector, but she has always loved diamonds. She adds:

– Diamonds go with everything. If I have a favourite piece of jewellery, one that I feel brings me luck, then I wear it all the time – day and night. But at the same time, I don't feel the need to show off a new look every day, I like beautiful jewellery that goes with both evening gowns and everyday clothes like jeans and a white t-shirt.

A larger jewellery box

One of the reasons why MariahIf her collection of sparkling jewellery calls for a more spacious jewellery box, the current collaboration with the jewellery house Chopard is just the thing. The majestic Haute Joaillerie collection was recently launched, with diamond-studded butterflies taking centre stage. The collection comprises a ring, a necklace, a bracelet and a pair of earrings. The collaboration also included a collection entitled Happy Butterfly x The Mariah Carey Collection, which comprises various designs of earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces, all featuring that classic dancing diamond at the centre of the butterfly’s body.

– It was an honour to work with Chopard, Mariah recently told Vogue magazine. Given that it’s a very large company, our collaboration was nevertheless very straightforward and relaxed. I met up with Chopard’s artistic director Caroline Scheufele We met via Zoom and brainstormed ideas; she sent me some sketches – it was a really enjoyable and inspiring collaboration.

It is all the more beautiful given that the entire collection has been created with respect for both people and nature – the jewellery is crafted from Fairmined-certified gold, and the diamonds come from suppliers approved by the Responsible Jewellery Council, a world-leading organisation working to establish sustainability standards within the jewellery and watch industry.

The butterfly: a symbol

The collaboration between Mariah or Chopard It all began a couple of years ago with a lovely Christmas present under the tree. Mariah opened the parcel to find a beautifully wrapped scarf with a butterfly motif and a Christmas card from Caroline at Chopard. They got in touch and hit it off straight away.

The fact that butterflies would be the main motif in the jewellery collection was a foregone conclusion for both Chopard and for Mariah. The butterfly symbolises renewed ambition and a free-spirited, light-hearted approach to life. For Mariah, the butterfly has been a symbol that has accompanied her for many years. Not only is her best-selling album *Butterfly* celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, but butterflies mean more than that to her. She has often spoken in interviews about her difficult upbringing, and when she became a celebrity overnight at the age of 19, she found it hard to adjust to her new life as a pop star. But thanks to her unique singing talent, a thick skin and a great deal of willpower, she has enjoyed a brilliant career with countless hit songs and best-selling albums.

– The butterfly represents a part of my life – breaking free from one’s past and getting the chance to blossom. The butterfly is a symbol of independence, of liberation. Getting through something difficult and coming out the other side. Just as the caterpillar leaves its chrysalis to become a beautiful butterfly that flies away. The butterfly as a symbol means a great deal to both me and my fans.

3 questions for Caroline Scheufele

VOYAGE contacted Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s artistic director, and asked her three curious questions about the collaboration with Mariah Carey.

What was the biggest technical challenge in creating this collection?
– The biggest challenge was actually Covid, as Mariah and I were unfortunately unable to meet in person. We had to discuss things and share sketches via Zoom. But it worked out.

I understand you suggested the butterfly theme – how did that come about?
– When we started discussing a co-creation, the idea of a butterfly collection came about very quickly. It really has been a brilliant moment to discover the first butterfly jewellery coming out of our workshops.

How did you react when Mariah Carey got in touch with you about a collaboration?
– Our collaboration began in December 2020, and it has been a wonderful journey. We share common values. The three creations in the Haute Joaillerie collection are crafted from Fairmined-certified ethical 18-carat white gold and diamonds from suppliers approved by the Responsible Jewellery Council. This approach aligns with the objectives of the sustainable luxury journey undertaken by the Maison. These values are equally important to Mariah, whose numerous charitable commitments are in harmony with Chopard.

Focus on sustainability

Over the years, Mariah Carey has often worn jewellery by Chopard. She appreciates both the jewellery house’s creative designs and its values: Innovation and creativity are key principles at Chopard, and their Happy Diamonds design has now become something of a legend: loose diamonds that move beneath two layers of glass, in both jewellery and watches. At the same time, Chopard is a company that drives sustainable development within the industry.

When Caroline showed Mariah some sketches of a necklace featuring a large butterfly studded with diamonds at its centre, it warmed her heart.

– The necklace is absolutely stunning; I’m incredibly proud to have been part of creating this masterpiece.

Marilyn loves jewellery

Mariah’s private collection of beautiful jewellery is of great interest to her 11-year-old daughter Monroe, who is named after Mariah’s great idol, Marilyn Monroe.

– Even as a two-year-old, my daughter used to put on my high-heeled shoes and tiptoe carefully around in them. Now she’s discovered jewellery and loves looking at it. She’s already decided which diamonds she wants. Mariah says that both Monroe and her twin brother Morocco like music, but she has no idea whether they’ll become artists like their mum. She often says in interviews that she tries to bring up her children to be independent individuals who can choose for themselves what they want to do as adults.

Just like Mum, they love Christmas and the fact that Father Christmas comes to visit with lovely presents. This year, Mum is hoping she’ll get something lovely from her children.

“The Tooth Fairy has been very generous to them of late, so I reckon their savings will be more than enough for a present for Mum,” Mariah recently told the American magazine W.

She adds that she obviously isn’t expecting any expensive presents from the children – it’s the thought that counts. Mariah says she understands better than most wealthy superstars that expensive jewellery isn’t something just anyone can afford. But if you can afford to make a quality investment, she recommends investing in stunning diamond jewellery. After all, who wouldn’t want to wear a stunning butterfly, designed by Mariah Carey and Chopard, around their neck?
